Mitie, Elements Green begin construction of 720MWh BESS in Nottinghamshire
The 720MWh BESS project, which was granted planning consent in June of last year, is set to be fully commissioned in mid-2027.

Solar and energy storage developer Elements Green has broken ground on the 360MW/720MWh Staythorpe battery energy storage system (BESS) in Nottinghamshire.
The £71.5 million (€82.9 million) Staythorpe BESS project features a 2-hour duration capacity designed for grid balancing services and peak demand management. It is being developed in collaboration with Mitie Power & Grid.
The 720MWh BESS project, which received planning consent in June of last year, is expected to be fully commissioned in mid-2027.
The facility will connect to the national transmission network through a purpose-built 400kV grid substation adjacent to the existing Staythorpe National Grid infrastructure.
G2 Energy, a Mitie Power & Grid company, is leading the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) phase as principal designer and principal contractor. The contract scope encompasses both the BESS facility and the high-voltage connection infrastructure.
As previously reported by Solar Power Portal, energy storage-focused lithium-ion original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Hithium will deliver multiple units of its 5MWh BESS DC block for the 360MW battery storage project.
The system architecture incorporates multiple 5MWh BESS DC blocks configured for optimal power delivery and energy storage efficiency. The design includes advanced thermal management systems, fire suppression technology and grid-forming inverters to provide essential grid services.

This deployment marks one of the company’s largest UK projects to date. The manufacturer has established a dedicated delivery team to support the installation and commissioning process.
Mark Caskey, managing director of Mitie Projects, emphasised that the project will be “one of the UK’s most significant energy storage projects” and noted that the developers will strive to deliver value for the local communities.
“Our partnership with Elements Green also creates real value for local communities – from jobs and education to biodiversity and beyond. We’re committed to supporting our customers on their journeys towards net zero to help achieve the UK government’s clean energy goals and creating better places and thriving communities,” Caskey added.
At the end of last month, Elements Green secured a major funding injection from Danish investor Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). The two firms inked a £69.5 million (€80 million) platform financing agreement structured through CIP’s Green Credit Fund I (CI GCF I).
The funds from this agreement will be used to develop and construct Elements Green’s solar PV and BESS pipeline, which currently totals over 13GW of combined solar and BESS capacity.

RES Group bags O&M contract for Staythorpe BESS
Renewable energy developer RES Group has secured a five-year operations and maintenance (O&M) contract for the Staythorpe BESS, and is scheduled to commence in 2026.
Manuel Sánchez, global head of O&M Services at RES, emphasised the significance of the contract: “We’re proud to be supporting Elements Green on such a transformative project. This contract not only strengthens our presence in the UK but also highlights the trust placed in our technical and operational expertise.
“Staythorpe is a strategically significant project and a strong vote of confidence in RES’ ability to deliver best-in-class performance on battery storage assets.”
