ZAM Steel for Solar Mounting – Why Self-Healing Corrosion Protection Matters
Solar mounting structures are expected to operate outdoors for more than 25 years while continuously exposed to rain, humidity, salt spray, temperature changes, and industrial pollutants. For this reason, corrosion resistance has become one of the most important factors when selecting materials for solar mounting brackets.
Among today’s advanced coating technologies, ZAM steel (Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium coated steel) has gained widespread attention for its outstanding corrosion resistance and unique self-healing capability. Compared with conventional galvanized steel, ZAM steel offers longer service life, especially in harsh environments where cut edges and drilled holes are vulnerable to corrosion.
This article explains how ZAM steel works, why self-healing protection matters, and why it is increasingly used in modern solar mounting structures.

Why Corrosion Resistance Matters for Solar Mounting Structures
Unlike many structural steel products, solar mounting brackets remain exposed throughout their entire service life.
They must withstand long-term environmental challenges including:
- Coastal salt spray
- High humidity
- Industrial pollution
- Acid rain
- Temperature cycling
- Continuous UV exposure
Corrosion not only affects appearance but can gradually reduce structural strength, increase maintenance costs, and shorten the lifespan of the entire PV installation.
Choosing the appropriate coating is therefore just as important as selecting the correct structural design.
What Is ZAM Steel?
ZAM (Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium) steel is a steel substrate coated with a specially engineered alloy consisting primarily of zinc, aluminum, and magnesium.
One of its most valuable characteristics is its self-healing mechanism, which protects exposed cut edges after fabrication.
This makes ZAM steel particularly suitable for laser-cut, punched, or bent solar mounting components.
How the Self-Healing Mechanism Works
During manufacturing, solar mounting brackets are processed through laser cutting, punching, bending, and other fabrication steps.
These operations expose fresh steel along the cut edges.
With conventional galvanized steel, these exposed areas become the first locations where rust may develop.
ZAM steel behaves differently.
As moisture reaches the exposed edge, zinc, aluminum, and magnesium ions gradually migrate toward the damaged area and form a dense protective corrosion product layer.
Instead of allowing rust to spread, this newly formed layer seals the exposed surface and slows further corrosion.
This natural process is commonly referred to as the self-healing effect.
As shown in laboratory testing, corrosion products gradually cover the exposed incision during salt spray testing, helping protect the cut edge over time.

Applications of ZAM Steel in Solar Mounting
Today, ZAM-coated steel is widely used across different photovoltaic mounting applications, including:
- Solar ground mounting structures
- Agrivoltaic mounting systems
- Solar carports
- Utility-scale PV projects
- C&Isolar installations
Its excellent corrosion resistance and fabrication performance make it especially suitable for projects requiring long service life with minimal maintenance.
